What Type of Resume Writing Format is Best

What Type of Resume Writing Format is BestWhat Type of Resume Writing Format is BestResume writing sounds easy enough. You write out your job history and experience, then sit back and wait for the interview offers to come in. But when it comes to actually putting pen to paper, many candidates get stuck. With so much on the line, its a lot of pressure. Where do you even begin?Start with the format of your resume. Once you have your work and education history properly organized into a clear format, the details become a lot easier to edit. So, whats the best resume format? The answers easy Reverse chronological. This is where you list your employment history in reverse order. It means your current job will be at the top of your resume and youll work your way backward through your career history, with your oldest job being last. Each position on your resume should include your job title, the company anthroponym and location, and the dates of employment, with a bullet list of responsibilit ies and accomplishments underneath. For instanceABC CORPORATIONAdministrative AssistantSeptember 2013 PresentResponsible for greeting customers in person and on the phoneetc. That said, there are many schools of thought about the best resume format to use, with some recommending creating a functional resume. Rather than listing work history in order, this type of resume focuses instead on skills and experience. For instance, it puts the most relevant positions and experience you have front and center, whether its your most recently held job or not.The problem with this type of resume is that its often used to hide a spotty work history or big gaps in employment. Hiring managers know this, which is why functional resumes are often a red flag for them. Not only that, but the reverse chronological resume is the industry voreingestellt for resume formats in 2017, 2018 and beyond and the format most hiring managers favor. Thats why its the best resume format to use.If, however, you have decades of experience and arent quite sure how to get it all to fit, list your most recent 10 to 15 years of work experience in reverse chronological order. Then create a headline for Prior Work Experience and simply list out your job titles, employer names and dates of employment.Need more help creating a resume that gets results, so you can land a great job? The Worst Excuses to Skip Meetings and Interviews

The Worst Excuses to Skip Meetings and Interviews The Worst Excuses to Skip Meetings and Interviews It happens time and time again and it seems like no ever learns. The same poor excuses to skip meetings and interviews are used over and over again. And everyone always gets caught in a lie, which leads to damaging trust between employers and job candidates. So, what are the worst excuses used way too often? Read the following below. “There was a death in the family” By far, this is the worst one a person can use. If you have an understanding of the consequences of actions, you know that lying and saying someone has passed away in your family will lead to more trouble than it’s worth. Here’s why: Staff will show you sympathy and most likely follow up with cards or gifts. The next day you come to work you will not be thinking about it. The first person who asks, “How are you doing?” will catch you off guard. You will have to deal with days of lying to people and dealing with their kindness. You will learn the true meaning of the saying, “Never cry wolf”. Ultimately, you will find this excuse will lead to you feeling incredibly guilty, getting caught in a lie the day that “dead person” calls you at work, or showing your staff that you are willing to play their feelings for simply not wanting to work or attend a meeting. Bad move. “I am too tired” There is not one person in this world who feels like sleeping in at least one day a week, even when they love their jobs. It just happens. We all feel tired in the morning. Some people combat this by working out and others by drinking coffee. Some have a work regimen to remind themselves that feeling tired is only temporary. The thing is people at your company or the general public (depending on your job) rely on you. They need to count on you. Skipping a meeting or interview because you are too tired leads others to believe they cannot count on you. And that means never being promoted and having a short lifespan in a company. Note: This,of course, does not apply to people with physical ailments or disabilities, such as Narcolepsy, Epilepsy etc. But such things are handled with Human Resources and are understood by employers to be a reasonable accommodation for work. “I have a personal emergency to take care of” Jobs are like relationships. If you do not communicate they fall apart. Using the “personal emergency” excuses sounds like a person who communicates poorly, tends to be overly dramatic, cannot be honest with him or herself, immature, has secrets, or is just full of bologna. If you are in a relationship, especially one where you are paid for working, and suddenly have this “personal emergency” you cannot speak of...your company will start to avoid seeing any reason to take you seriously or trust you. This type of excuse is used to try to kill any questions about skipping a day of work or an interview. And it always backfires in ways unseen to the employee. You lose jobs and trust at work but because you kept people at arms-length, they will see no reason to communicate why you never get a raise, a job, or get promoted. “The car broke down” or “My train/ferry/plane wasn’t running” Given you are an adult interviewing for or working at a job, the expectation is that you have a contingency plan for when things go wrong. And if you do not have one in place, they will see it as a sign that you just did not care enough to make one. Another thing to keep in mind, there are these things called “cabs” and/or “Lyft” and “Uber”. If you live in a metropolitan area, using the excuse that trains were not running does not work. Most likely, the people you were going to interview with or work with, took the same train to get to work. You look silly for even attempting to claim that your train was the only one that broke down when everyone else used it. Natural disasters aside (because they do happen), using this excuse shows anyone you work or interview with that their time is not worth a contingency plan. If you do not care enough...why should they do the same for you? “It is a religious holiday for me” Here is a great way to embarrass yourself: Claim to be a religious observer as a reason for a day off, only to find out the person you are interviewing with is a real observer. More so, we live in a global economy and have Google. If you use this excuse and it works, you now have the problem of everyone at work thinking you are of a religious faith...and you clearly are not based on the food you eat, the fact you never took that day off before, etc. If it does not work, you look ridiculous and almost childish. “I tried to make it...but I couldn’t” Ughhh! Nothing says, “I could care less about my job or interview” more than this excuse. This excuse screams of a person who is not willing to think, gives up too soon, and just feels no obligation to explain him or herself. The strange side effects of these excuses Believe it or not, some of the largest companies in the world have doctors on staff, expect doctors’ notes from staff, and bosses who keep track of the reasons why staff takes off. If you have no real reason to skip an interview or job, just suck it up and go to it. You will be glad you did.

6 Steps to Negotiating Flexible Work Arrangements

6 Steps to Negotiating Flexible Work Arrangements 6 Steps to Negotiating Flexible Work Arrangements 6 Steps to Negotiating Flexible Work Arrangements Flexible working arrangements may be just what you need to achieve work-life balance. Here's how you can make the case to your boss. [TWEET] Working moms and adults responsible for the care of an elderly relative know only too well the pressures of the daily grind while trying to tend to loved ones. As parents across the nation push for flexible schedules and greater work-life balance, employers are taking notice. While not all businesses are on board, the trend towards non-traditional, flexible working arrangements is unmistakable and the savvy employer knows that staff satisfaction and retention relies on happy employees. On the flipside, the shrewd employee knows that the trick to effectively advocating for flexibility is convincing your manager that the situation benefits the company just as much as it does you. The changing nature of labor, the influx of millennials into the workforce, and the demands of a new global economy are converging to inspire companies to seek viable solutions to shifting expectations. If businesses are to attract and retain top-quality workers, practical executives know that being open to part-time schedules, unconventional hours or job-sharing are key to a thriving enterprise. Arm yourself and take these steps before you hit up your boss for a flexible working arrangements: 1. Research If you hope to work at a particular company, start by perusing the company website to see if flex work arrangements are one of the company perquisites. If you already work there, check with co-workers who you think may have successfully negotiated a flex arrangement. Ask them how long they were in their current position before they felt secure enough to present the boss with their proposal. Then, ask them for tips on how to approach this particular manager about flexible working arrangements. 2. Have a strategy Successfully navigating the waters of negotiation means considering the effect that working from home, or working odd hours, will mean to the bottom line. Address that concern by outlining a plan to communicate with others who rely on you for rapid turnaround. Offer evidence indicating how the change may improve productivity, morale and organizational effectiveness. To squelch any possible dissent, a specific written plan must be laid out ahead of time, showing how a restructured schedule will provide value to the company. 3. Acquire a problem-solving viewpoint Clarify the advantages that satisfied workers offer to the overall success of your organization. Rather than approaching your supervisor with a clumsy pitch disputing current office policies, demonstrate that you've thought this through with your department's advantage in mind. Show that the company stands to gain revenue and/or a client base by offering stats on other firms that flourish when job sharing or flexible work schedules are par for the course. 4. Be flexible In seeking flexibility for yourself, watch out for rigidity in your proposal. Know the company culture. If high-brow and steeped in tradition, your unconventional plan may not get a positive reception. Some resistance may understandably arise from a lack of experience overseeing off-premises staff. Objections to flexible working arrangements may also be voiced if the boss anticipates further staff requests for comparable arrangements. Be prepared to provide a backup plan or two if your supervisor balks at first. 5. Compromise By its very nature, negotiating relies on both parties giving up something in order to get something. If you are in sales, your job is to demonstrate that your productivity will increase, and with it, revenue. Your boss needs to feel that your organization will continue to profit even while allowing you to work from home. Show her that your intent is to continue to produce exemplary work, and she may offer you the chance to do that work from home. Lack of compromise has derailed some from achieving the holy grail of work-life balance. 6. Ask First, ensure that the timing of your request does not correspond with an important deadline or gargantuan project. Then, on a low-stress day, present your flexible working ideas to your supervisor with detailed plan in hand. Your well-crafted ideas deserve more than a suggestion so make sure you ask. Suggest a trial period to implement your request, so that she doesn't feel that it's an all-or-nothing pitch. Offer her time to think about it, and then follow up in a week or so. Knowing how to negotiate your way to a more humane work life will give you alternatives to the drudgery of '9-5 and barely alive.' In making a pitch for flexibility in the workplace, it's essential that you have a strategy for making your plea. When you present a proposal that exceeds your boss's expectations, you'll be on your way to knowing how real negotiation works, and with a bit of finesse, you might just give as good as you get. Guide to Getting a Job in the Thoroughbred Industry

Guide to Getting a Job in the Thoroughbred Industry Guide to Getting a Job in the Thoroughbred Industry Many people long to have a career in the Thoroughbred industry, but few make the dream a reality. Here are a few tips on getting into the business: Choose Your Path There are many different jobs available within the Thoroughbred industry at the track, on breeding farms, and in other related fields such as veterinary medicine, sales, transportation, and insurance. At the track, you will find trainers, assistant trainers, jockeys, jockey agents, exercise riders, racing officials, horse identifiers, photographers, hot walkers, farriers, veterinarians, and administrative staff. On breeding farms, you will find farm managers, broodmare managers, stallion managers, yearling managers, foaling attendants, grooms, veterinarians, stallion booking secretaries, bloodstock agents, and administrative staff. Other related positions may be found with shipping companies, sales agencies, insurance agencies, veterinary clinics, publications, and industry organizations. Consider Relocation Realize that while there are breeders and racetracks across the country, the Thoroughbred industry is largely based out of Lexington, KY, and Ocala, FL. Southern California and New York also have significant populations of Thoroughbreds. There are more racing-related jobs in these areas than anywhere else. If you have the flexibility to change locations, you’ll be at a huge advantage.  If you are in an area with fewer opportunities, you may face much more competition for any available jobs. Use Your Education If you are still in school or planning on attending, be sure that you choose a major in an area that can help you in your pursuit of a Thoroughbred career. If you plan to work with horses in a hands-on capacity, a degree in Equine Science or Animal Science could be useful. You could also major in accounting, marketing, journalism, or business- each of these degrees can lead to a position with racing organizations, farms, or publications. Your degree doesnt have to be in an equine-specific field since there are many related positions in the industry that dont require hands-on experience. Two schools that offer degree programs are  University of Arizona Race Track Industry Program  and  University of Louisville: Equine Business. Consider Internships Remember that while a degree is certainly a plus, this industry tends to place a high value on practical experience and references. If you can get a job with a top outfit, it will go a long way on your resume. An internship can be a great way to get your foot in the door and brush up on your horsemanship skills. Many of the large farms in Lexington take on interns. Some farms offer free on-site housing.  Take a look at the websites for the Kentucky Equine Management Internship program, the  Darley Flying Start Course, and the Irish National Stud Course. There are many racing industry programs, but viewing these three can give you a good feeling for what will be involved with an internship in the racing industry and are considered some of the best programs out there. Network Many jobs never appear in the classified section of a newspaper or magazine, and this is often the case with positions in the Thoroughbred industry. If you’ve completed an industry internship, you might get a job lead from that organization which is not offered to the public. A friend at a farm might know of entry-level grooming or foal watch positions. Use your connections whenever possible. Go to all the industry events that you can and try to meet the vets, breeders, and managers. Networking is key in the Thoroughbred business.

Environmental Engineering Division Introduces New Education Su... Environmental Engineering Division Introduces New Education Su... Environmental Engineering Division Introduces New Education Support Program ASME's Environmental Engineering Division has launched a new program that will offer financial support to innovative new education programs that encourage students and educators to become engaged in environmental engineering and promote the importance of environmental engineering education in communities around the world. The deadline for students, teachers and Environmental Engineering Division (EED) members to submit a program proposal is Nov. 1. Through the new initiative, called the Environmental Engineering Education Support Program, the division intends to award a total of $25,000 each year to support programs that advance the impact of environmental engineering worldwide. The division expects to fund up to five proposals with a maximum of $5,000 per award to students, educators and EED members who propose interesting ways to support environmental education in their communities. By establishing this new program, EED hopes to realize several objectives, which include encouraging students to both appreciate the significance of environmental engineering in society and to pursue careers in mechanical and environmental engineering. The program is also intended to motivate members of the division to become more active in the communication of engineering principles and practices that can identify and solve environmental issues in their communities, and to inspire educators to become better acquainted with ASME and mechanical and environmental engineering. Proposals, which should be a maximum five pages in length, must be submitted by e-mail to Martin Edelson, EED Executive Committee, at edelsonm2@asme.org no later than Nov. 1. How to Kick Off a Job Search When You Lack Confidence

How to Kick Off a Job Search When You Lack Confidence How to Kick Off a Job Search When You Lack Confidence It’s easy to get intimidated when you’re reading a job description, especially for a position that you really want. You might think, “I don’t have what it takes to get that gig,” or “A company like that wouldn’t hire someone like me.” But it’s time to silence the negative chatter rattling around in your head and start cultivating your job search confidence. Here’s how. Avoid the negativity. Negative Nancy’s are everywhere, and they’re most likely to pop up when you’re trying to do something positive with your life. Steer clear of the stress and drama that pessimistic people can try to project into your life by avoiding them altogether. And the same goes for your inner critic, too, which can sometimes be even more deafening than anything (or anyone) else. Set yourself up for success. Get ahead of the ball by finding ways to make sure that you have a successful job search from the start. If you’re looking for a remote job, try to set up your home office space now. Get the office equipment you’ll need in order to work from home successfully, and learn the programs that your future position will require. And if you’re planning on becoming a digital nomad, start looking at areas on the globe where you’d like to work in order to make that dream a reality. Invest in your health. It’s hard to feel good about yourself when you’re not healthy. Thing is, in order for healthy habits to stick, you have to incorporate them into your life gradually. After all, you can’t expect to lose 30 pounds, quit smoking, and start eating- and loving- kale overnight. So include some healthier habits in your day-to-day living. You might start off your mornings by taking a walk around your block, and eventually build it up to a jog. You can substitute sugary drinks for some good ol’ H2O. When you start to invest in yourself physically, your confidence will naturally improve and extend over into your job search, too. Reach out to friends and family. To stay the course as you commence your job search, you’ll need the love and support of people who mean the most to you. Talk to friends and family who can offer you love and guidance- and a pep talk that can give you the confidence that you need. Remember, these are the people who know you the best, and they can be your biggest job search cheerleaders. Plus, you never know if they might have connections to the job you’re looking to apply to. Assess your application. It’s easy to get intimidated when you’re reading a job description, especially for a job that you really want. Before you get too down in the dumps, though, read over your resume and cover letter. Look at your previous work experience and the skills you possess, especially those soft skills that remote employers want in their workers. See how far you’ve already come in your career- not how far you need to go. Chances are, you just needed a reminder that, yes, you do have what it takes to go after that job you want. How to Find Internships Through Instagram

How to Find Internships Through Instagram How to Find Internships Through Instagram As social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn have become a very important part of today’s internship and job search process, it’s not surprising that Instagram has become yet another way to network and find internship and jobs that are relevant to your search for potential career options.  Instagram has created a unique platform in which students can look for internships and jobs. How Instagram Can Help You Get an Internship Instagram is a great way to brand and market yourself to employers. As small and large businesses alike use branding tools to establish their uniqueness in the marketplace. Branding is also a tool that individuals can use to market themselves to employers by creating an image that illustrates your interests and uniqueness that employers will want to know about.         Ways Instagram Can Help in Your Search Instagram is just one of the social media sites that can be helpful in the internship and job search; but to get the most benefit out of these sites, try using a variety of them, such a Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Instagram to get your presence out there. Applicants can express their own interests and values through their Instagram account. One way to do this is to take the time to look at the social media sites of employers of interest and see how you align with them and get that message out there. At first, you may want to start by Googling companies that you think you are interested in working for. From there you can see what social media sites they use and connect with them. At this point, you will want to make sure that your personal social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Instagram are in order to ensure that you are portraying the right image so that employers will want to consider you as a potential candidate for an internship or job with their company. If you are in a creative field, you will want to post photos of things you have done or created. Instagram is much more visual than other social media sites and is a great place to get yourself noticed. You may post photos related to a company’s product or image, in order to gain interest from the employer.   Whenever relevant, be sure to tag them in your message so that they are more likely to view your Profile. When using Instagram in your internship and job search you will want to be sure to fill your site with your interests in a particular industry, industry, or even specific company when relevant. Gain More Visibility by Using Hashtags Using hashtags is another way to get yourself noticed by employers. You will want to use them sparingly to maintain a professional presence but by using them to create a positive impression as well as keeping abreast and utilizing a company’s hashtag, you will be reinforcing your brand and skills to those employers that you want to reach the most. Engaging in conversations by commenting online is a way to establish a  presence and demonstrate your knowledge and interest in an industry, career field, or company. One of the main reasons to use Instagram is to highlight to potential employers  your knowledge, skills, and interests in a more visual way.   Focusing on what’s most important to employers will tend to get you noticed as well.   For example, if a company focuses on volunteer or community service work aside from its overall business, you will want to show your interest in a cause you believe in by highlighting or even starting some volunteer or community service of your own. If you have not yet jumped on the social media bandwagon when looking for internships and jobs, you may want to start. By highlighting your strengths, skills, and interests you will be branding yourself for future employers. Each year more and more employers are using social media sites in their application process so it’s important to recognize that the internet does hold a special place for employers when they are assessing potential new hires and what’s on your Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, or Instagram Profile can make the difference between getting hired or not.

How to Play Nicely With Recruiters

How to Play Nicely With Recruiters How to Play Nicely With Recruiters Learn the ground rules of effectively working with recruiters.  In a perfect world, recruiters would reply to every application they received and provide answers about the progress of each job seeker’s candidacy. Unfortunately, this behavior is rarely the case. All too often job seekers find themselves stuck in the dreaded ‘black hole,’ wondering why their application was rejected, or if it was ever reviewed at all. While I can’t eliminate all the frustrations of the recruiting system, I can arm you with information to make the most of the situation. Here are five tips to help you effectively work with recruiters.Make it personalIdentify specific recruiters to reach out to individually, rather than posting your resume on the agency’s site. There’s more incentive for a recruiter to speak with you when you’re not already in their agency’s database. Whenever possible, locate the recruiter’s email address on their company site or online professional profile so you can em ail your message and attach your resume. Your message should clearly state what type of role you’re targeting and how you can provide value to one of their clients.Play the odds, but stay targetedKeep in mind that recruiter outreach is a numbers game. Reach out to at least five new recruiters every week, and follow up one week later. Search online for top recruiter lists such as Ladders’ Top Recruiters   and ELITE Program, and other directories to identify recruiters or agencies that recruit for the types of jobs you’re qualified for and interested in. Additionally, look for recruiters or agencies that routinely pop up in your search results when you’re looking for online job postings. If you’ve worked with a recruiter in the past or have a trusted colleague who has, don’t be afraid to reconnect or ask for an introduction.Help recruiters find youBuild a strong online presence so recruiters find you. This includes uploading the most current version of your resume to all the targeted job boards you use and maintaining a professional online profile that’s aligned with your resume. Actively participate in targeted groups on LinkedIn and industry-specific membership associations. Post comments, attend meetings and events, and share relevant articles â€" recruiters are notorious for trolling these groups to scout for potential candidates.Spell out your qualificationsOnly apply to positions for which you meet the must-have requirements. Applying to a role for which you’re unqualified is not only a waste of your time and the recruiter’s, but it also shows the recruiter you didn’t read the job description carefully. Recruiters are extremely busy â€" they spend an average of 6 seconds looking at your resume before deciding if it’s a fit. Make this as easy as possible for them by spelling out your qualifications in your cover letter, and incorporating key terms from the job description in your resume.Become a resourceIf a recruiter sends you a job that’s not the right fit, refer talented friends and colleagues who might be a better fit. This gives you a chance to pay it forward and keep your name top of mind with the recruiter. You’re also helping to clarify your brand and job goals to the recruiter so when the right opportunity pops up, you’ll get the call.

You should think twice before you believe the crazy colleague gossip

You should think twice before you believe the 'crazy' colleague gossip You should think twice before you believe the 'crazy' colleague gossip When you hear that gossip about a “crazy” colleague who is “difficult to work with,” consider the source, especially if the target is a woman. These planted rumors could be based on personal animus more than objective facts, as actress Natalie Portman recently argued. In her acceptance speech as an honoree at Variety’s Power of Women Event last week, Portman spoke in support of the Time’s Up movement and advised the audience to stop believing gossip without questioning why a person is being called crazy in the first place.“Stop the rhetoric that a woman is crazy or difficult,” Portman said. “If a man says to you that a woman is crazy or difficult, ask him, ‘What bad thing did you do to her?’ That’s a code word. He is trying to discredit her reputation.”How gossip is used to undermine women’s reputationsPortman’s pointed advice on how gossip can be wielded as a weapon against women resonated, drawing immediate cheers from the audience. Words like”crazy† have a long history of being used to undermine women’s professional experiences. Writer Emma Carmichael even wrote a long list of coded words of “female disparagement” that get deployed in the workplace. When a male coworker has a personal grudge, “Difficult to work with” can be code for “Sometimes expresses herself without regard for the self-esteem of her male interlocutors,” she writes. “Big personality” becomes code for “Frankly, a little too loud for your liking.”These are not just verbal insults you can bounce back from and ignore; the dissemination of gossip can ruin careers. Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein reportedly used his influence to intimidate women into silence and to derail the careers of his sexual assault victims. Director Peter Jackson admitted that he blacklisted Weinstein accusers Ashley Judd and Mira Sorvino in response to a “smear campaign” by the producer.“From 1992, I didn’t work again until 1995,” Annabella Sciorra, one of Weinstein’s accusers, told the New Yorker about how Weinstein ruined her professional reputation. “I just kept getting this pushback of ‘We heard you were difficult; we heard this or that.’ I think that that was the Harvey machine.”When professionals call a colleague “crazy,” they are painting an ugly picture of an unstable colleague. The victim becomes too emotional to be believed. It turns the critique personal. To put workplace conversation back on track and to make workplaces a safer, inclusive place for everyone, employees need to eliminate this language from their vocabulary.
